“The Isles of the Sea”

Brant Gardner

From here to the end of the chapter, Yahweh shows why the Gentiles not only need another Bible but another revelation from the Jews—meaning, the Book of Mormon, which he describes as a Jewish text like the Bible.

This verse contains the phrase “isles of the sea,” a term from Isaiah that Nephi adopted into his theology as referring to his people. (See commentary accompanying 1 Nephi 19:24.) Yahweh is proclaiming that he will speak to his people. In addition to the text that will come from Jews in the Old World (the Bible), Yahweh will also speak to his covenant people on the “isles of the sea.” The sacred record created by these New World Jews will also come forth. See commentary accompanying 1 Nephi 19:10 for more information on the phrase “isles of the sea.”
