“I Am Able to Do Mine Own Work”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

It would be delightful if kings and presidents the world over were to announce in regal splendor that God had spoken anew in this final dispensation. It would be helpful to the missionary cause if preachers and evangelists of all persuasions were to bear witness of the Prophet Joseph Smith and the work he set in motion.

And it would be glorious indeed if linguists and archaeologists and anthropologists and scientists without number were to establish empirically what the Latter-day Saints have been saying about the Book of Mormon for over a century and a half. Such occurrences, however, do not appear to be on the horizon of possibility, at least not until the Lord returns in glory.

But such things are not necessary; at least they are not necessary for the Lord. His work will move forward in humility and with quiet dignity.

The simple but profound testimonies of thousands of Mormon missionaries and faithful members of the Church will continue to be borne to all the world and to be received by honest truth-seekers. The Lord is able to do his own work in his own way, and his way is not man’s way (see Isaiah 55:8-9).
