Examples of this phenomenon are found in Exodus 17:6 and Numbers 20:11. In Paul’s language, ancient Israel ate of the same spiritual meat and drank of the same spiritual rock. That Rock was Christ (see 1 Corinthians 10:1-4).
As Moses, the mediator of the old covenant, brought forth water in the desert, so Christ, the mediator of the new covenant, would bring forth the waters of life in a desert of sin.
