The Assyrians scattered the ten tribes. The Babylonians removed many of the Jews, some of whom would later return. By the time of Christ, the Jews were widely dispersed by economics as much as by conquest. The result was, nevertheless, that they would be scattered. For Nephi’s purposes, he needs to see the scattering as occasioned by an enemy, for this will be the future he sees for his own people.
