“The Only Begotten of the Father Shall Manifest Himself Unto Them in the Flesh”

Monte S. Nyman

After their return from Babylon they experienced wars and rumors of wars until the time of Christ, the Only Begotten of the Father, was born among them. Nephi acknowledged that Christ was the Father (Creator) of heaven and earth and foretold that the Jews would reject him (v. 12). He prophesied of his being crucified and being resurrected after being in the sepulchre for three days (v. 13). It is significant for New Testament study to note that it was three days and not part of three days.

Nephi’s prophecy that Christ will rise “with healing in his wings” is recorded in Malachi in the Old Testament. However, Malachi had not been born so it is evident that another prophet had prophesied of this earlier. Nephi’s testimony that he had seen Christ’s day probably refers to his vision of Jerusalem as recorded in 1 Nephi 11.
