“The Day of the Lord Cometh”

Brant Gardner

Literature: Isaiah repeats “the day of the Lord.” The theme is also the same, simply reinforced by the duplicated introduction. However, verse 9 mentions the destruction of “sinners,” not just Babylonians. Because Babylon so clearly represents the sins of the world in Isaiah, this addition is not a surprising one, but it does highlight Isaiah’s eschatological focus. Whatever partial fulfillment this prophecy may have received in the past, this destruction of the sinners is complete only during the second coming of the triumphal Messiah.
