The “hypocritical nation” is Jerusalem. After Assyria conquers Jerusalem’s neighbors, Samaria and Damascus, it will turn toward Jerusalem (2 Ne. 20:9–12). Isaiah describes the destructiveness of its attack and, speaking for Yahweh, emphasizes that God not only approves but directs this attack. Assyria is the tool of Yahweh’s vengeance.
