“By the Way of the Red Sea”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

This verse belongs with chapter 18; it corresponds to 18:23 in the Hebrew Bible. During the period of trouble, darkness, and anguish, the tribal regions of Zebulun (the region around Nazareth) and Naphtali (the region of the Sea of Galilee) were afflicted by attacks from the Assyrian monarchs Tiglath-pileser III, Shalmaneser V, and Sargon II.

The “way of the sea” is called in Hebrew Derekh HaYam and in Latin Via Maris, the great international highway that passes along the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean. Why theBook of Mormonhas “Red Sea” is not known.

“Beyond Jordan” in Hebrew is Ever HaYarden or Greek Perea. “Galilee of the nations” is Hebrew Galil HaGoyim, or “Galilee of the Gentiles,” because it was formerly inhabited by noncovenant peoples.
