“Seek Unto Them That Have Familiar Spirits”

Brant Gardner

Rather than accepting true prophets, Judah seeks knowledge of the future from soothsayers, whom Isaiah scorns as people who “peep and mutter.” They make sounds but no sense. Despairingly, he asks why a people would consult fortune tellers when Yahweh is willing to speak to them? The answer for Judah is the same as it is for us. Soothsayers will tell us what we want to hear. Yahweh tells us what we need to know. The scriptures (law and testimony) contain the word of God. Yet, sadly, some who read those sources will not find the truth therein. These are they who “have not light in them.” Without the Spirit, they read even into the scriptures the things they want to hear, just as they do with the soothsayers.
