“Ye Shall Be Broken in Pieces”

Brant Gardner

Isaiah denounces Judah’s trust in its own resources. Isaiah is describing actions that Judah has taken and their inevitable future consequences. Judah and the “far off nations” will plan and organize but in vain; they will be “broken in pieces.”

Literature: These predictions are bracketed by the “O Immanuel” of verse 8 and the “God is with us” of verse 10. The underlying Hebrew of verse 10’s “God is with us” is Immanuel (here translated for meaning rather than as a personal name).Isaiah is contrasting the God who is still with them, and their foolish choice to believe in man rather than God.
