“This People Refuseth the Waters of Shiloah That Go Softly”

Monte S. Nyman

Having foretold the future of Israel, the kingdom to the north, the Lord now prophesied Judah’s future. Isaiah used the metaphor of a calm pool or spring, the waters of Shiloh, to symbolize Christ (v. 6), and a strong overflowing river symbolized the king of Assyria (v. 7). Since Judah has rejected the still, small voice of the Spirit of Shiloh, the force of Assyria would overflow against them also. In the Assyrian conquest of northern Israel, some of the exterior territories of Judah were also affected. He spoke in the name of Immanuel, the child of the virgin (Isaiah 7:14), designating that he was Jehovah, the God of the Old Testament, who will come to earth and be “God with us.”
