“The Lord Shall Hiss”

Brant Gardner

As already noted (see commentary accompanying 2 Nephi 15:26), the King James Version translates as “hiss” the Hebrew term better translated as “whistle” or “summon.” Yahweh will call swarms of insects from Egypt and Assyria, an image that connotes overwhelming numbers. Judah will have to contend with masses of Egyptians and Assyrians. Ludlow suggests: “The stinging bees represent the massive armies of Assyria that would eventually destroy Israel and Syria and then later attack Judah. The pesky flies represent Egyptian armies that would also come into Judah as they counterattacked the Assyrians.”
