“Immanuel”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Nephi sees in vision the coming of the Savior, born of “a virgin, most beautiful and fair above all other virgins” (1 Nephi 11:15). How Nephi must rejoice over this passage from Isaiah that confirmed his own spiritual witness concerning the Lamb of God, who will come to earth out of eternal love for God’s children. The Book of Mormon, like the Old Testament, is a handbook of prophetic utterances foretelling the atoning mission of the Redeemer, Jesus Christ (see, for example, Isaiah 9:6; Hosea 13:14; Micah 5:2; Zechariah 9:9; 1 Nephi 10:11; 2 Nephi 17:14; Mosiah 13:33; Alma 7:7–13; Helaman 14:2). Chapter 7 of Isaiah deals with the first level of meaning as to the historical events of the day and as to the prediction that the alliance of Ephraim and Syria would not stand against Judah; but the higher implication of the message is that no earthly kingdom will stand against the kingdom of God to be established by the Son of God Himself during His earthly ministry.
