Apparently, Isaiah’s admonition was not convincing to Ahaz, so Yahweh volunteers to provide a sign that will be persuasive. Isaiah tells Ahaz that, in essence, he may choose anything “either in the depth, or in the height above”—thus including all possibilities. Ahaz declines, perhaps because he cannot see any way to withdraw from his Assyrian alliance. He may not want any information that would require him to alter his course.
