“The House Was Filled with Smoke”

Brant Gardner

Comparison: Gileadi translates this verse: “The threshold shook to its foundation at the sound of those who called and a mist filled the temple.” The NIV reads: “At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.” Although the KJV does not include the “threshold,” the image is of voices of such power that they cause the building (the temple) to shake. Verse 1 had established that Yahweh’s robe filled the temple. This verse describes the temple as filled with smoke (or mist, in Gileadi). The smoke may represent the sacrifices offered to Yahweh, the fire of which supplies the live coal (v. 6). This is not, therefore, an ordinary throne room, but a temple-throne.
