“Wo Unto Them That Draw Iniquity with Cords of Vanity”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Doom is pronounced through a host of woes and judgments.

Verse 14: A gaping hell (Hebrew sheol—death and spirit prison) awaits the rebels, to swallow them up.

Verses 15–16: This is the same message as 2 Nephi 12:11, 17; Isaiah 2:11, 17.

Verse 17: The once-flourishing vineyard has become mere grazing land.

Verse 18: When we willingly tie ourselves to our sins (like beasts tied to their burdens), it is difficult to later free or disentangle ourselves from those sins. “Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin” (John 8:34). Sin is a slave driver, and it is oppressive; 2 Peter 3:3–4 calls such people “scoffers.”

Verse 19: Hypocrisy and sarcasm are offered by individuals who say, “Fine. Let this ‘Holy One of Israel’ bring on his work—so we can see and know for sure.”
