Verse 13 relies not only grammatically (through the “therefore”) but poetically on verses 11–12. “Therefore” creates the conditions of verse 13 as the outcome of the actions in verses 11–12 (worship that lacks understanding of Yahweh’s work). Poetically, Israel’s hunger and thirst contrast with feasting (vv. 11–12). Thus, the men of Israel drink to excess, yet thirst, feast, yet hunger. They hunger and thirst spiritually because they substitute human pleasures and works for the spiritually nourishing work of the Lord.
