“A Cloud and Smoke by Day and the Shining of a Flaming Fire by Night”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

On the “cloud [of] smoke” and “flaming fire,” compare the cloud of smoke and fire that guided and protected the Israelites in Sinai (Exodus 13:21–22). The second image signaling protection for the righteous is a tabernacle (the Hebrew word means “booth”) in the vineyard, providing shade from the harsh summer sun and cover from the pounding winter rains. The two figures depict the total safety and comfort—in all seasons, under all conditions—for those deserving of God’s watchful care.
