The curse on the daughters of Zion is not a condemnation of personal ornamentation but of ostentation. These verses follow, and should be read in the context of the condemnation of the elders for consuming Judah’s goods and oppressing the people. Blenkinsopp observes: “Ostentatious display of this kind as practiced at the court is purchased one way or another with the skin off the back of an oppressed peasantry.”
