Why is a land of liberty so important?

Thomas R. Valletta

“The Americas were destined in the providences of the Lord to be a place of liberty so that in them the gospel might be restored and from them its saving message go forth to all the world. Such a destiny is facilitated by the absence of monarchic governments, which usually have been synonymous with oppression and the lack of religious freedom. Christ is our king, and if, as Lehi prophesied, we ‘serve him according to the commandments which he hath given, it shall be a land of liberty’ which shall never know captivity, and in it the righteous ‘shall be blessed forever’” (McConkie and Millet, Doctrinal Commentary, 1:268).
