“Buy Wine and Milk Without Money and Without Price”

Monte S. Nyman

50 Come, my brethren, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without price.1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.51 Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy. Hearken diligently unto me, and remember the words which I have spoken; and come unto the Holy One of Israel, and feast upon that which perisheth not, neither can be corrupted, and let your soul delight in fatness. [2 Nephi 9:50–51]2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which isgood, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. [Isaiah 55:1–2]

In conclusion, Jacob quotes the invitation from the book of Isaiah for all to partake of the Atonement. In comparing the Book of Mormon text with the King James text the Book of Mormon is more complete, another evidence of “plain and precious things taken away from the [Bible]” (1 Nephi 13:29). Nephi later paraphrases the first verse of the above quotation, in the same context (2 Nephi 26:25). The Atonement is available to us without material cost, and will satisfy the hunger and thirst of our souls.
