“They Must Be Damned”

This passage explains the conditions under which mercy becomes operational in the atonement for sin. The atonement is required because God commands all to obey his law; yet sinful human beings cannot perfectly obey. The penalty for disobedience is damnation (v. 24). Jacob presents the dilemma: Yahweh has made known his law. To violate it will damn us. Yet human beings are incapable of keeping the law.
