“For He Knoweth All Things”

Monte S. Nyman

Jacob’s third major point was to explain how the Atonement was made. Jesus was able to make the Atonement because of his complete foreknowledge or omniscience of the inhabitants of the earth. “He knoweth all things and there is not anything save he knows it” (v. 20). Without this knowledge he could not make an infinite or an all inclusive atonement. But he did make an infinite atonement; “he suffereth the pains of all men, yea, the pains of every living creature, both men, women, and children, who belong to the family of Adam” (v. 21). The family of Adam is “the family of all the earth” (2 Nephi 2:20). He “suffereth these things for all” (D&C 19:16), “that the resurrection might pass upon all men [overcome physical death], that all might stand before him at the great and judgment day” (2 Nephi 2:22).
