“Our Spirits Must Become Subject to That Angel”

Brant Gardner

Jacob gives an eternal reason for the problem of the separation of body and spirit. For Jacob, the body/spirit connection is absolutely essential to our eternal joy. (See commentary accompanying 2 Nephi 2:25.) Rather than focus on the joy, however, Jacob explains what would have happened had the atonement not occurred. Our spirits, deprived forever of their bodies, would become subject to the devil. He continues this thought in verse 9.
