Had there been no atonement, then the command of God to Adam—“In the day thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Moses 3:17)—would have taken effect and endured endlessly; man would have been a have in the world of spirits, unable to know the fulness of joy that comes only in the resurrected state (see D&C 93:33-34).
