“Put on Thy Beautiful Garments”

Brant Gardner

Repeating the image of awakening, Yahweh invites/commands Zion to put on its “beautiful garments.” Yahweh is covenanting that, if Israel will obey him, he will turn his fury on their oppressors, they will be clothed in beautiful garments (rather than a prisoner’s garb), and they will be protected from future oppression.

Unfortunately, Israel did not “awaken” and was not saved from future calamities, one of which was the impending destruction that sent Lehi to the desert.
