“The Cup of Trembling”

Brant Gardner

Yahweh assures Israel, who is reeling under his fury, that he will pour it out on their oppressors. This passage concludes, however, with a sorrowful description of the effect of that oppression. Israel’s afflictors have broken its soul and trampled on it, treating it literally as the dust of the streets. Implicit in Yahweh’s promise to punish Israel’s oppressors is his assurance that he does recognize the worth of Israel’s soul.
