“I Am the Lord Thy God Whose Waves Roared”

Monte S. Nyman

15 But I am the Lord thy God, whose waves roared; the Lord of Hosts is my name.15 But I am the LORD thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The LORD of hosts ishis name.16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion: Behold, thou art my people. [2 Nephi 8:15–16]16 And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou artmy people. [Isaiah 51:16]

The phrase “that divided the sea” in the KJV, but not in the Book of Mormon, was probably added by some scribe to clarify the phrase that follows “whose waves roared” (v. 15). However the Lord’s control of the waters is not limited to Moses’ dividing the Red Sea. Putting words in the servant’s mouth and covering Israel in his hand (v. 16) is similar to 1 Nephi 21:2 (see note there). That Zion will be recognized as the Lord’s people is also part of the promise of the “new covenant” spoken of in Jeremiah 31:31–33, and commented on above.
