Text: Jacob begins by quoting Isaiah 49:22–23, which Nephi has already used in a sermon (1 Ne. 21:22–23) that quoted all of Isaiah 49.
Comparison: While this verse has faces in the plural, the original from Isaiah as well as the earlier quotation in 1 Nephi 21:23 have the singular face. Skousen notes that the Hebrew behind the Isaiah face is dual in number and originally meant “nostrils.” While this is interesting information, it is pertinent to the text of the Book of Mormon if and only if there is an underlying Hebrew term, a position for which I am unable to find sufficient supporting evidence. I agree with Skousen’s alternative: “The change to the plural faces here in 2 Nephi 6:7 probably has nothing to do with the original Hebrew underlying Isaiah 49:23. Rather, faces may simply derive from what Joseph Smith or Oliver Cowdery would have expected as speakers of English.”
