“Why Should I Give Way to Temptations”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

Salvation is not the promised end of some spiritual experience, no matter how marvelous it may have been. None in our dispensation, and few who have walked the earth, have been the recipient of more spiritual experiences, more heavenly manifestations than the Prophet Joseph Smith.By way of personal warning, the Lord reminded him that

“although a man may have many revelations, and have power to do many mighty works, yet if he boasts in his own strength, and sets at naught the counsels of God, and follows after the dictates of his own will and carnal desires, he must fall and incur the vengeance of a just God upon him” (D&C 3:4).

The warning is to all, for the Lord has said:

“There is a possibility that man may fall from grace and depart from the living God; therefore let the church take heed and pray always, lest they fall into temptation; yea, and even let those who are sanctified take heed also” (D&C 20:32-34).
