“If Ye Are Brought Up in the Way Ye Should Go Ye Will Not Depart from It”

George Reynolds, Janne M. Sjodahl

Here Lehi teaches his household the principle taught long before his time, "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Prov. 22:6) To bring up a child does not mean only to teach him the right way, but to train him in walking in it. Training, says Layman Abbott, is the production of habit. Actions oft repeated become a habit; long continued becomes a second nature. When a child is trained in telling the truth and doing what is right, he will do so, even at the cost of his life, because it has become his nature.
