“The Prophecies Which He Wrote There Are Not Many Greater”

Monte S. Nyman

Nephi adds his own testimony of the prophecies of Joseph who was sold into Egypt. He implies that there are other prophecies that were not mentioned. This should whet our appetite for the time when they “go forth unto all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people who were of [Joseph’s] seed” (1 Nephi 5:18). In 1836 the Saints in Kirtland, Ohio, purchased some mummies and some that had scrolls containing the writings of Joseph of Egypt. Joseph Smith “commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics, and much to our joy found one of the rolls contained the writings of Abraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt” (HC, 2:235–36). A small portion of the scroll of Abraham was translated, and is now published as the Book of Abraham in The Pearl of Great Price. Some day we hope to have the scroll of Joseph and its translation as well. Through these two sources we can learn more about the great prophecies of Joseph of Egypt (v. 2).
