“Joseph's Name”

D. Kelly Ogden, Andrew C. Skinner

Joseph in Egypt knew that the latter-day seer would bear his same name and the same name as his own father (Joseph Smith Sr.). Interestingly, the common practice in early America was for the first son to be named after the father, but the first two sons born to Joseph Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith were Alvin and Hyrum, reserving the name Joseph for the third son, thus unknowingly fulfilling an ancient prophecy.

“And he shall be like unto me; for the thing, which the Lord shall bring forth by his hand, by the power of the Lord shall bring my people unto salvation.” The Hebrew word “salvation” is yeshua, which is the mortal name of the Savior. Yeshua is Jesus. What Joseph Smith helped restore definitely brings people to salvation, to Jesus.
