“After the Name of His Father”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet
This has reference to Joseph Smith, Sr. The Prophet’s father was the first to hold the office of patriarch in this dispensation. Such was his right by birth, he being “the oldest man of the blood of Joseph” (HC 3:381), meaning that he was the oldest direct lineal descendant of Joseph of Egypt on earth at the time. How appropriate that the first patriarch (“head” or “prince of the tribe”) should bear the name of his ancient forefather, who saw and prophesied of him!
