“Things to Act and Things to Be Acted Upon”

Monte S. Nyman

God created all things, but some things were created to act, and some things were created to be acted upon (v. 14). “In the end of man” refers to the purpose for which men were to be placed on earth. Men were placed upon the earth to act. Our first parents were Adam and Eve. They were to subdue the earth, “and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowls of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth” (Genesis 1:28). Therefore, all these things were to be acted upon. That dominion was to be a righteous dominion, but there was opposition, even the forbidden fruit in opposition to the tree of life (v. 15). As quoted above, when told of the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve were told to “remember thou mayest choose for thyself, for it is given unto thee” (Moses 3:17). They would be accountable for how they used the earth, and how they exercised their dominion over all things upon the earth. They could not be accountable for their choices if they were not enticed by one choice or another (v. 16).
