“Opposition in All Things”

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

Afflictions and challenges are part of the plan—a necessary element of our probationary test in mortality (see Abraham 3:25; D&C 29:39). They help us to grow and are ultimately for our good (see D&C 122:7).

How can we view opposition and adversity in a heavenly light and explain these things to others? Lehi skillfully teaches the doctrine of opposition in all things as eternal truth—a law upon which man is allowed to fulfill his destiny. The essence of mortality is that we are meant to face trials, tribulations, affliction, and adversity. Without such trials, there can be no joy. Growth and joy come from overcoming opposition with honor and courage. Just as afflictions are essential, so also are choices. There are inevitable consequences and blessings in all things as a result of our choices. The choices we make determine our destiny.
