“Lehi Defends His Faithful Son Nephi”

Monte S. Nyman

Lehi’s defense of Nephi to the brothers is direct and understandable, but note that he depicts his faithful son as a person of Zion. Nephi had been an instrument in the hand of God to bring the entire group to the promised land (v. 24). He sought only for the glory of God, and the eternal welfare of his people (v. 25). The sharpness he had used was the sharpness of the power of the word of God (v. 26). It was the power of the word of God, or the Spirit, that opened his mouth to command his people (v. 27). Nephi was truly of one heart and one mind, and had been foreordained to lead his people to the promised land.
