“The Fulness of His Wrath Must Come, and the Righteous Be Preserved”

Brant Gardner

In this litany of last-day calamities, Nephi sees a need to comfort the righteous. Yahweh will preserve them “by his power” even during the “fulness of his wrath.” He again quotes a prophet—presumably Isaiah?—but no passage in the received text of Isaiah contains the specific promise that the righteous “shall be saved, even if it so be as by fire.” The last phrase does not mean that fire will save the righteous but that the righteous will be spared, even when, as prophesied, burnings afflict the earth.
