The image of vengeance uses violent imagery. It should not be taken literally, but rather as a metaphor that the oppressors’ methods will be turned back upon them. It is the equivalent of “those that live by the sword shall die by the sword.” This passage ends with Yahweh announcing his own name and titles to seal the promise.
