“Set Up My Standard to the People”

Brant Gardner

The phrase “set up my standard to the people” means that the gospel will be brought to the Gentiles who will then restore Israel, another humbling thought for proud Israel. The imagery invokes an interesting set of relationships. The parent-child relationship is explicit in the mention of the sons and daughters, but the “parents” are not carrying the children. Rather, fulfilling the parents’ role are the Gentiles, for it is upon their shoulders that the children are carried. This suggests the extent of this reversal of relationships.
