“Can a Woman Forget Her Sucking Child”

Brant Gardner

Yahweh portrays his care in terms of a mother’s love for her nursing infant. Women would find this image particularly powerful, since they experience it while men only observe it. Given the scriptures’ strong focus on men, perhaps there is an extra message in this image. Israel (and Laman and Lemuel) are not experiencing the love of Yahweh as a reality. The image tells them that the care is undeniably there but in a form they cannot directly experience. Perhaps this image was chosen to emphasize that, regardless of current feeling, Israel (and the brothers) really are receiving Yahweh’s love and care.
