“And He Hath Made My Mouth Like a Sharp Sword”

W. Cleon Skousen

Isaiah was a highly-educated citizen of Jerusalem. He wrote the entire book of Isaiah in poetic form. He also had an unusual gift of eloquence and spoke with great clarity, which all of the people heard and understood according to 2 Nephi 25:5. Isaiah knew that he had a power of expression which was like a sharp sword, and he called this a gift given to him by God. As a further credential Isaiah relates that the Lord said to him, "Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified." Note that the word Israel is a title as well as a name. It means soldiers of God, and it were as though God were saying in this particular proclamation, "Thou art my servant, O soldier of God, in whom I will be glorified."
