“I Will Not Suffer My Name to Be Polluted”

This verse restates the theme of verse 9, completing a bracket around the Lord’s reason for allowing the travails of Israel (and of Lehi’s band). The restatement of “glory” further reinforces the selection of that word, rather than “praise,” in verse 9. In this parallel, the meaning is both introduced and summarized by an emphasis on God’s glory.

Variant/Translation: The King James Version text for this verse has “for how should I suffer my name.… ” The Book of Mormon original manuscript follows the King James Version but the corrected printer’s manuscript and all printed editions use the reading above. The same sense as the 2 Nephi Isaiah’s “will not suffer my name to be polluted” is seen in Ezekiel 39:7 “I will not let them pollute my holy name any more.… ”
