“The God of Abraham and of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, Yieldeth Himself”

W. Cleon Skousen

When the Book of Mormon first came forth in 1830 the entire Christian world was looking upon the God of the Old Testament as a different person than the God of the New Testament. Nevertheless, here is Nephi writing between 580 and 570 B.C.clearly teaching that the angel told him the God of the Old Testament was the same as Jesus Christ of the New Testament. In other words, Jesus is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This harmonizes with the teaching of Eusebius, the first Christian historian, who plainly taught that Jesus in the spirit was the Jehovah that appeared to the ancient prophets.

Notice that in this verse Nephi names four early prophets who knew all about the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Of course, the first coming of Christ was considered a myth by the Jews and therefore they took all of these scriptures out of the Jewish Bible. However, Nephi had in his possession the plates of Laban where the writings of all four of these prophets were recorded. It will be recalled that the plates of Laban were primarily the scriptures of the tribe of Joseph who was sold into Egypt.
