The part of our present Book of Mormon that is found in the books of 1 Nephi, 2 Nephi, Jacob, Enos, Jarom, and Omni came from the small plates of Nephi. Much of the remainder of the Book of Mormon (the books of Mosiah, Alma, Helaman, 3 Nephi, 4 Nephi, and Mormon) came from Mormon's abridgment of the large plates of Nephi. The large plates of Nephi were evidently made first. First Nephi 10:1-2 would seem to indicate that Nephi made the large plates of Nephi soon after his arrival in the promised land (about 588 B.C.). However, Nephi did not make the small plates of Nephi until approximately 570 B.C. (2 Nephi 5:28-33.)
