“The Water Which My Father Saw Was Filthiness”

W. Cleon Skousen

Perhaps it was to get Nephi onto another subject that the older brothers asked about the river of water in Lehi's dream. Now we get an interesting insight. Nephi said the river represented the depths from which the deep mists arose and many wandered off and were drowned because of it. Nephi said that when he saw the depths of this river it was like sewage. It was filthy. He said his father had been too occupied with other aspects of his dream to notice this particular detail but Nephi, in typical seventeen-year-old pride, said he noted it.
