“I Beheld Many Multitudes of the Gentiles Upon the Land of Promise”

W. Cleon Skousen

Now in this next imaginary slide Nephi tells us that the Gentiles who came as refugees were blessed by Lord so that they prospered and gradually expanded across the face of the land. Originally this group of Gentiles had great ambitions to convert and domesticate the Indians. This was because the American colonists identified the native population with several passages in the Bible. For example in Isaiah 18:2 and Zephaniah 3:10-13 the scripture talks about a remnant of the lost tribes of Israel living on an island or continent west of Africa. These people are described as scattered and peeled but would yet bring a gift to the Lord.

This led the refugee Gentiles to have great expectations for the Indians. Unfortunately, hostilities developed and massacres occurred on both sides. We hear a great deal about the Indian massacres, but who talks about the Pequot war in Connecticut 1637 when the Puritans laid siege to more than 500 Indians and burned every man woman, and child? So, as everyone knows, the Indians were gradually pushed toward the west and their lands expropriated by the Gentiles precisely as Nephi had predicted.
