“A Filthy People, Full of Idleness and All Manner of Abominations”

Brant Gardner

Those who dwindle in unbelief are the Nephites who survive the final wars. The Lamanites had been unbelievers for nearly a thousand years by the time Nephi sees that “these shall dwindle in unbelief.” Significantly, the former Nephites who dwindle in unbelief “became a dark, and a loathsome, and a filthy people, full of idleness and all manner of abominations.” This is language that the Book of Mormon usually reserves for Lamanites. Nephi sees that those who survive the end of the Nephite people become Lamanites.
