Here Joseph Smith removed the do auxiliary in his editing for the 1837 edition. Nonetheless, ten examples of “did pass” are retained in the text, including one very similar example in Helaman 6:13 (“and thus the sixty and fourth year did pass away in peace”). The critical text will, of course, restore such usage (which is characteristic of the biblical language style from Early Modern English). Summary: Restore the biblical sounding “did pass” here in 1 Nephi 12:12 since this is how the earliest textual sources read.
