“Slain for the Sins of the World”

Jana Reiss

Mormons believe that Christ’s suffering made possible “the Atonement,” or the reconciliation of humanity to God through the forgiveness of sin. Christ’s death also broke the bonds of physical death and makes eternal life with God possible. In contrast to other Christian groups, Mormons believe that the Atonement began in the Garden of Gethsemane, when Jesus sweat blood because of his compassionate agony for humanity (see Luke 22:44). The work was completed on the cross.
